Decentralized autonomous organizations disrupt the organizational structures that are commonplace. The current structures of these organizations are hierarchical and ownership of the success within organizations are very reliant on the decisions that the leadership makes. DAOs are run by contributors. The contributors in the DAO vote on decisions that will impact the direction of the organization based on their respective governance models. Actions are presented in a detailed document called a proposal which can be suggested by anyone in the community.
DAO proposals drive action and progress and scale for the organization. Therefore, the requirement for the proposals to be easily understandable, clear, and influential is paramount to drive the community to approve the proposal. A proposal ideally includes a background that explains why this proposal was suggested to the community. The background is most likely discussed with the community in the communities group chat which would live in Discord or Telegram before moving on with a written proposal. This allows for the proposer to discuss with the community, developers, and the core team of the organization. After this discussion and brainstorming with the community, there should be a more clear vision of whether or not a specific proposal is a viable course for an idea.
Once a proposal exits the idea stage, the idea can be formulated into a formal proposal and shared in a forum managed by the DAO. Common tools that are used by DAOs to aggregate their proposals are apps like Discourse, Snapshot, and Tally. The forum is where the proposer outlines all of the required steps necessary to take an idea from idea to execution. It should be noted that certain DAOs have different government structures that don’t permit every member to submit a proposal in the forum. For instance, only people with at least 2,500 veCRV (2,500 CRV locked for four years or 10,000 CRV locked for one year) can create a new DAO proposal for Curve. According to Curve, a proposal should include a summary, an abstract, motive, technical specifications, pros and cons, and a poll for the proposal to be either approved or vetoed.
